Christina (Virgin Among the Living Dead)

by on Mar.07, 2010, under Daily Review

This is a fine example of classic Franco. Dream like, arty with sweet direction, whimsical plot and quirky characters, and not to mention beautiful European actress’.  The film starts with a young English girl, Christina (Christina Von Blanc) travelling to Spain for her fathers reading of the will. In a huge castle, her strange family are bizarre to the extreme and Christina’s stay just gets weirder and weirder. She’s not exactly straight either, with peculiar traits, strolling around the castle half naked, wind blowing around her night gown. It soon becomes apparent that the family are in fact all deceased. Is it Christina’s vivid imagination at play? Or is she really in touch with the other side?

What would you expect from a Franco movie? He’s got a great style and vision creating films which are so easy and enjoyable to watch and this is no exception. His framing is perfect with every shot picture perfect. His characters are brilliant and interesting, lustful and kooky. It’s no wonder Orson Wells spent so much time with him, he’s truly a film maker of artistic integrity.

If you have yet to experience Franco, this is a great place to start. Expect the unexpected. Expect vampiresque Euro women with a 70’s vibe. Expect weirdo supporting oddball characters. The soundtrack is amazing here too, with a grooving base line which drifts in and out of scenes, balanced by light spooky piano. Great stuff.
