El segundo nombre (Second Name)

by on Nov.14, 2009, under Daily Review

After the suicide of her father, Daniella (Erica Prior) seeks an explanation and encounters more than she expected. With a conspiracy flowing back hundreds of years, rooted deeply in the bible, she finds there are some very SegundoNombre1dark secrets buried by her friends and family and one in particular, her own origin, buried in her garden. Can anyone be trusted?

The story is excellent, which can only be expected, based on the novel by Ramsey Campbell, the worlds leading master of horror in the literary world. The direction is also good with a steady pace and some very nice looking shots and scenes. Paco Plaza, famous for REC, it’s easy to see that this film has a lot of talent behind the camera, but is badly let down by the cast. The leading actress, although offering one of the best performances in this movie, I believe isn’t strong enough to carry the film alone, although she shines in many of the scenes. Denis Rafter stands out with a memorable disturbing performance as an old family friend/Uncle. It’s incredibly easy to enjoy this film, to allow the acting to be won over with a great look and feel by direction, choreography and plot. It’s the desire to know and unravel as the story feeds the viewer. The conspiracy is very clever, fresh and original. There’s also something very Friedkin about this film, its pace and film stock maybe.

The novel is a definite on any horror fans list.
