House of 1000 Corpses

This is a vicious sassy pulp rock n roll gore fest. Rob Zombie takes the kitsch of the 70’s B movie and washes it with glorious cinematography with such love and admiration for the source, it’s a joy to watch. He lifts from a huge genre pot without 1000hesitation and repays with creative vision and originality and a sharp nastiness with a lipstick, bloodstained smile. Glorious.

The plot is a simple one. Two couples are on an American road trip, seeking out the weird and wonderful for a book they are researching. They hear the tale of Dr Satan and know they need to find out more. Taking directions, they find themselves with a crazy girl hitchhiker and a flat tire and soon they are in a crazy mansion with a weird family. They know they are in too deep. The plot sounds like many seen before, but what Zombie offers is a fresh glossy professional looking reinvention, which is harsh and sexy with a fast clever script and a stunning cast to boot. It’s great to see a creative force with such enthusiasm for the genre.

My favourite scene has to be the moment one of the girls finds herself in a tunnel with two old creepy blokes staggering towards her. Fearing for her life, she realises it’s only her furry bunny suit they are after. The plot did get a bit extreme towards the end; the whole Dr Satan moments could easily have been cut from the film with the mutant hunter with the huge axe being a bit ‘over the top.’ Sheri Moon is stunning along with Sid Haig and Bill Moseley who both offer real horror creepiness.
