Devil Hunter

by on Sep.09, 2010, under Daily Review

I’ve only ever seen this one once previous and really didn’t enjoy it. It seemed to be the slowest film ever with very little happening. I guess my tastes have changed over the years as this time I can really appreciate the masterful work of Franco.

Al Cliver plays the Devil Hunter, a military ace, a mercenary. A one man A-Team. He’s out to rescue a kidnapped model, Ursula Fellner, (Sadomania),  whose been taken to a cannibal island as a sacrifice to a devil god. Can he reach her in time? Or will he get distracted by the rest of the naked cast and shaky camerawork?

This is so much better than I remember it being. It’s got a cool vibe and some quality scenes. As you can expect, Franco can’t just make a straight cannibal movie, so when the genre was in favour, he knocked out his version of the facts. This is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen. It has some great cinematography paired with some shocking camerawork. The cast, Al Cliver from Flesheaters, Bob Foster from Cannibal Terror and Gisela Hahn from Contamination pull the film together and the plot works well. What more can I say? The gore is quite good and also, lookout for the big climax at the end of the film with Cliver fighting with the naked devil on the top of a mountain. Spectacular, especially with the distracting echo effect on the fighting grunts.

There isn’t many films which I could watch twice on the same day, but here’s one which I just couldn’t resist. The script is quite poor but mesmerizing at the same time. The film is staggered in pace for the most part but this is the magic of the movie. There is something quite special here.
