The Sweet Hand of the White Rose – Short

by on Mar.22, 2013, under Other Musings

Here’s another little gem from Davide Melini, The Sweet Hand of the White Rose, shot in 2010. I was impressed with Melini’s The Puzzle (2008), but here he explores narrative and depth within the short film medium and really focuses on telling a tale and keeping the viewers interest wanting to know more. Visually SHOTRthe film looks a delight, easy to watch, clever cinematography which glides along with subtlety. The film centres around an irreversible event which involves Mark (Carlos Bahos) and an unexpected encounter with a young girl, the White Rose (Natasha Machuca), a bike and a car. It’s an event that ties the two together which is only fully realised in the closing scene. A nicely told visual tale that allows the viewer to constantly question the outcome, and offers a very neat and rewarding finale.

Good make-up and some creepy moments in a gothic cemetery. Plenty of tension as Mark looks to resolve his own conscience, though a mind which is somewhat distorted. There is a pretty cool score here too which is reminiscent of Simonetti.

The Sweet Hand of the White Rose has picked up several awards including, the ‘2nd Best Independent Film of the Year’ at the Italian festival ‘Indie Horror’; the ‘Best Cinematography’ award at the Spanish festival ‘Cesur en Corto’; and the ‘Honorable Mention’ at the American festival ‘Tabloid Witch Awards’ and has been selected for official competition in many prestigious festivals, ‘Málaga Spanish Film Festival’ (Spain), ‘South African HorrorFest’ (South Africa), ‘David di Donatello Award’ and the ‘Fantafestival – International Science Fiction and Fantasy Film Show’ (Italy).

Davide Melini shows here that he can carry a solid plot which grips the audience. I’ll be looking out for more from this talent.

The Puzzle by Davide Melini

by on Mar.16, 2013, under Other Musings

Davide Melini’s short movie ‘The Puzzle’ offers a snapshot bundle of italian beauty. With tips of the hat to all that has come before, pure classic Proffondo Rosso era Argento inspiration and homage, Melini does in a short few minutes what other directors struggle with over an entire feature. Artistic cinematography, tension and style: this is a neat short which requires a second viewing. Shot it in one day with a budget of 300 Euro Melini’s ‘The Puzzle’ won ‘3rd Best Italian Film’ at the “Rome International Film Festival”

Take a look The Puzzle. I’ll be exploring more of Davide Melini’s work over the weekend and hopefully have some words from the man himself in the form of a short interview.

Check out Melini’s blog here.

From IMDB: A woman refuses to give money to her son, despite of his continuous pressure. One night she decides to relax and forget her troubles with her favorite pastime: making puzzles.
