RIP Gunnar Hansen

by on Nov.08, 2015, under Other Musings

Very saddened to hear that today we have lost yet another horror legend. Gunnar Hansen, who made his impact on the world of cinema back in 1974 in his role as Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Originally from Reykjavik, Gunnar HansenIceland, his family moved to the USA when he was just aged 5. The Hansen family settled in Maine before moving to Texas aged 11. Whilst in collage, he auditioned for the role of Leatherface and the rest is history. You can read all about my gushing thoughts on TCM here, which I believe is probably the most important film (both mainstream and genre) ever made.

Gunnar was a big character; friendly, creative, and a talented writer as well as having incredible screen presence. He will always be remembered for his role as Leatherface, the crazy, retarded, human face wearing, chainsaw wielding, maniac who was loosely based on serial killer Ed Gein. Although he only played the role in the original 1974 version, and declined a revisit to the role in the (very good) reimagining  of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003 due to feeling insulted that the original required a remake, he took up the chainsaw as a weapon in various other films throughout his career, notably Fred Olen Ray’s 1988’s Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers.

2015 is turning out to be a sad year for the genre. First Wes Craven back in August and now Gunnar Hanson, aged on 68, died due to pancreatic cancer. Rest in Peace Gunnar, you’ll always be my number one horror monster legend.

My deepest condolences are with Gunnar’s close friends and family at this time.

Fear Itself – documentary.

by on Oct.19, 2015, under Other Musings

A good friend of mine, cineaste and film maker, DW Mault just pointed me in the direction of this little gem – Fear Itself. Charlie Lyne has created an outstanding documentary which explores every aspect of the horror genre. An outstanding monologue, carefully narrated byAmy E Watson, carries the viewer through a history of horror along with a very well sourced collection of clips which all flow seamlessly. I loved it. I really need to watch this again on a much bigger screen. Check it out here, free on iPlayer.

Night of the Living Dead – lost footage found!!

by on Oct.17, 2015, under Other Musings

This is the kinda ‘found footage’ horror story that really gets the blood pumping. George Romero has found the the holy grail of the genre! A 16mm work print of his 68 masterpiece, Night of the Living Dead, including a 9 min. scene previously unreleased.

The scene also includes, apparently, the largest zombie scene in the entire film. Just how do these things go missing??!! The NightoftheLivingDeaddiscovery was made whilst George was rummaging through his personal collection, for additional material for Martin Scorsese with an eye on remastering for a fresh release for what i’d suspect would be the 50th anniversary edition.

I don’t need to mention how amazing this is gonna be, but expect an ultimate release, theatrical, directors, extended and a whole host of extras. Take my money now George!

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES. We’ve been waiting for this for some time. Jane Austen’s celebrated Zombie romance. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy take on the zombie menace with full on martial arts and weaponry, in this blood soaked masterpiece and discover their true love for one another. I really don’t remember this version when studying in school.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES will be released by Lionsgate UK in cinemas across the UK & Ireland on Friday 12th February 2016.

BRUTAL star Morgan Benoit has been named “Male Action Performer of the Year” at the 2015 “Action on Film Festival.”

“A nuanced lead performance that should, by all rights, make Morgan Benoit a star.”

Scream Queens – TV

by on Sep.26, 2015, under Other Musings

So, just how good was Scream Queens? The outrageous comedy horror TV series from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning executive producers of GLEE and “American Horror Story.” Being Scream Queenstreated to 2 episodes on its launch evening, this show is a rollercoaster of sarcasm, gore, scorching dialogue and ingenious ways to die, with a killer cast which includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer, Skyler Samuels, Nasim Perdad, Billie Lourde, Oliver Hudson, Diego Boneta, Glen Powell, Lucien Laviscount and Guest Starring Ariana Grande & Nick Jonas to name a few if not all.

The ‘Scream’ inspired TV series revolves around a college campus which has an unusual high number of gruesome murders, mostly within the desirable sorority house, Kappa Kappa Tau, which also holds a dark secret.

This is great stuff and pretty damn perfect and with two episodes viewed, i’m already a huge fan, but i just wonder how long this show can keep up the momentum. 2 episodes and maybe 15 deaths so far, we could soon run out of cast.
