The Night of the Sorcerers
by Geoff on Jul.01, 2010, under Daily Review
Amando de Ossorio’s classic vampire/voodoo outing. This is a classy flick, brilliant solid direction from the Spanish master himself, creating quite a fine looking film. It’s neat and smooth with a cool 70’s vibe about.
The story follows a group of mostly women explorers heading into the jungles of Africa. They encounter some strange folk tales about voodoo tribes, sacrifice and vampires. It’s not long before the females in the expedition are picked out one by one in the night, and transformed into fur bikini wearing vampires, running slow-mo through the jungle, like a Linx advert. It’s great! A great cast perform with real zest, Maria Kosty, Barbara Rey, Loreta Tovar and Simon Andreu are all exceptional.
Ossorio shows his experience here, taking a very simple plot, but embellishing it to a highly enjoyable 90 minutes with a film that looks great and sounds stunning, care of Fernando Garcia Morcillo; a real funky vibe going on.
I know this all sounds a bit crazy, but it’s actually a very solid film, both in looks and feeling. It’s stylish and atmospheric. Well worth a look. Spanish Vampires in Africa: Great idea.
