Lord of Tears – packaging
by Geoff on Oct.14, 2013, under Other Musings
This might be a bit of a strange review, but i had to get something down on paper… or should that be up on the website… regarding the outstandingly beautiful packaging which Lord of Tears is being distributed within. I have never seen such carefully designed, well thought out and loved to the point of releasing a
DVD and Soundtrack combo in a full gatefold, stunningly illustrated sleeve, wrapped in black tissue paper with a feather. This just all looks so god damn good and it only adds to the whole experience. There is also a very nice photo booklet and a 440 page downloadable
book which you can grab after watching the film so as not to introduce any spoilers.
Compare this to the usual experience of ordering a film from a popular media website, the disc arrives, it is plastic, often with a broken spool to hold the disc in place. You sigh and place the item on the shelf for a rainy day, deflated by the loss of your hard earned cash. Hex media offer something much more emotionally valuable.
Hex Media are doing something totally ‘out there’, offering a unique experience to the purchaser of genre products, with a lush product to enjoy and desire rather than cheep plastic casing. Their M.O. is to focus on premium produced physical products over the VOD downloads. I’m all in favour and this is even before i’ve even seen the movie!
For the record, i’ve been awaiting this film for quite some time, excited by the press still which were offered some time ago, the film looks beautiful, dark and totally what 365 loves. It is reported as being a revitalised low-budget, supernatural chiller in the true British Hammer tradition, following the likes of The Wicker Man, The Innocents and The Haunting.
I’ll be viewing the film over the next few days and will offer a full review; my first in over 2 years since Black Swan. Check back soon just to see if you can judge a book by its cover.
