Nekromantik 2

by on Jun.10, 2010, under Daily Review

Following of from the brutal first film, Jorg Buttgereit offers us a second opportunity to see a bit more of the continuing adventures of Ms M.

The film opens with Ms M (This time around, Monika M) heading for the graveyard in search of the recent burial of her late boyfriend, taking a spade, she recovers the body to find true love once again. There was always something missing between the pair: death. The film offers a slight change in direction, with Monika meeting a bloke at a cinema by chance, which results in some real romance, but things are not really right in this relationship, and she yearns her old bloke from the grave.

This is a much sharper film than the first. Some great technique, and great looking scenes. The effects are unbelievable for the production costs and some moments are gruesome beyond belief. The love affair is very well dealt with and documented through a series of ‘nice days out’. Symbolism is all over the place two, with framed reflections of character through animal and statues and he is lead around a zoo like a monkey.

Once again though, real life slaughter of animals is disgusting. Although here, the seal slaughter is lifted from a veterinary operating table, rather than performed for the sake of it, although it’s hideous viewing.

Buttgereit does well here to champion his first film, and return with another equally shocking tale in the same area which actually compliments the first. It’s bigger and better, but works well alongside. Nothing is revisited really either, with fresh new ideas and again, another shocking twist at the climax.
