This is a special week and one which i’ve wanted to slip in earlier, but due to Z Month, we’ve been on hold. 7 films fresh from the LA Afterdark Horror Fest. Enjoy.

- The Graves
- The Reeds
Aki (Sasa Handa) arrives at an all girls school, in Japan, just as a viral outbreak causes the campus to lock down as its inhabitants turn into crazy zombie type creatures, out for blood. The only uninfected, apart from Aki are the school swimming club. It soon becomes clear, Aki is a trained military assassin, escaping her murderous past in order to live as an ordinary school girl. Using her skills, she is forced to relive her terrible past in order to help the team to survive. The swimming club are soon brandishing weapons and cleansing the infected. But this is a film of double crossing and megalomaniac terrorist freaks who kidnap and mentally torture young women rather than a straight forward Zombie film.
This is a nicely put together film. It’s plot, although a little far fetched works well. The acting is good and it’s shot beautifully, with good lighting and plenty of atmosphere. The fight scenes are great fun too, with all sorts of creative uses of school apparatus and swimming kit. One scene has a teacher decapitate a student with a ruler. A protractor used as a throwing star. A flipper used as a kind of fighting mitt/knife. This balanced against the shocking scenes of abuse cause the film to offer a very strange viewing experience. This is no light hearted gore film, despite the obvious marketing of girls in swim suits killing zombie teachers, and holds some difficult grim scenes. A concealed laser in a later final scene comes as a tremendous relief.
