I nearly played an April Fool myself here and was thinking of reviewing a different film. If only I did! This is an obvious film and when standing alongside many of the other slasher flicks of the 80’s, (Burning/13th/Bloody Valentine/Sorority) its difficult to see any real merit in this run of the mill affair.
A school prank on Marty, the local nerd, goes wrong. He ends up disfigured. Years later, the class are invited to a school reunion on the site of their old school; a now run down shell of its former glory. One by one, the class are bumped off in various different forms. It’s all been done before and on the whole, many of the others did it much better. This doesn’t mean it’s a bad film. The acting isn’t up to much, apart from the talented Caroline Munro, the films true saving grace. Why she took this role is anyone’s guess as she stands out from the rest of the cast. The deaths are all a bit odd here too. One has a blokes stomach exploding which is good gory fun, but later we see a girl take a bath (Why she takes a bath in an old school during a party with people being murdered is a crazy decision and unbelievable route to take a plot), suddenly, the tape spews out boiling red water and she bubbles and burns to death. Why didn’t she just hop out when it first got hot? A couple get electrocuted whilst romping on a metal bed. That’s quite inventive. I also like the jester outfit which Marty wears, seen throughout as a silhouette and the end sequence is also quite horrifying. But, the worst thing about this film is the score. Christ it’s harsh on the ears. My final words on this film: I’m wishing I watched the ‘other’ 80’s April Fool’s Day (Fred Walton) from the same year. (86)
