Nattevagten (Nightwatch)

by on Dec.02, 2009, under Daily Review

Dutch thriller surrounding a young law student, Martin (Nikolaj Coster Waldau) who finds employment as a security guard, covering the night shift at a local morgue. Bodies start mounting up from a local serial killer with a fetish for scalping working girls. It’s a classic plot to create a pure Hitchcock style thriller. Plenty of rich characters with deep dark secrets and whilst we follow our protagonist, are we sure he is not responsible for the murders? As he plays a game of dare with his restless best friend we are introduced to a darker side of friendship and camaraderie.

This film is full of surprises. It looks great, characters are believable and the situations they find themselves in are totally shocking, horrific and very real in an anecdotal way which all add to a tremendous twisting story. It’s no wonder this was remade by Hollywood only 3 years after its Dutch predecessor, with a much more famous cast Ewan McGregor, Pat Arquette, Nolte and Dourif. I haven’t seen this remake, but I can only guess what has been replicated and what magic has probably been lost, despite a stunning cast and the same director Ole Bornedal. (Maybe I’ll seek it out over the next few weeks for a comparison)

Notable performance goes to Kim Bodnia who plays Jens, Martin’s best friend who knocks out some stunning screen presence, but saying that, I couldn’t have chosen a more perfect cast, right down to the creepy mortician (Niels Anders Thorn) who is anything but obvious in character. Well worth a look.
