Jack Hill has made some fine films. Coffy, Foxy Brown and one of my favourite films ever, Spider Baby (I’ll add this to the list) so I was glad to include Blood Bath in the 365 project. It’s an interesting movie and shows some real talent and vision from the young genre director. Moments of experimental camera work amongst an otherwise very steady well paced movie make this film stand out from the main. A plot which pays tribute to classic Universal, also holds a few beautiful moments. The resurrection of the victims is a stunning scene, one which has been used since, most notably in ‘Manic’. The choreographed dance scene on the beach with Marissa Mathes is also memorable and the incredibly haunting, dream like moment out in the desert with the beautiful Lori Saunders is a treat.
The basic plot involves a group of artists searching for the next movement in the art scene. When a new artist ‘Sorti’ (William Campbell) starts a new wave, The Dead Red Nudes, beautiful girls and models start going missing in the neighbourhood and an old tale of a vampire comes to life.
It’s exciting viewing with a glimmer of what is yet to come from this fine director.
